Miniretirement with 250K
You’ve had the idea.
More than once.
About the thing that you wanted to build. That project you wanted to try. A little cool thing for the kids. A helpful app for the school. A neat little business that helps local solopreneurs.
That thing you want to build. The project you want to try. The version of yourself that doesn’t work under someone else’s logo.
And every time, the same thought stops you:
“Not yet. I’m not financially ready.”
So what is the number that makes you ready?
Most people would just mindlessly proclaim : a million. Or something in the whereabouts.
This is an uninformed guess. Maybe boroowed from retirement articles and studies online. It really does disservice to the idea of miniretirement. A time of exploration and reinvention.
The number is totally madeup and unmoored.
I think the real number is $250-300K. And in this piece I want to show you how and why of it.
The Million-Dollar Trap
Say you are a midcareer professional. Somewhere in your mid thirties to mid fourties. If you have had a white collar job, in any of advanced western counties, chances are that your net worth has climbed to a reasonable number of a couple of 100,000 dollars. Someone saving 2000 a month, (yes sounds like a lot) in early years, would have a reasonable chance of having reached a quarter million.
Now comes the trap. Every finance article and gurru you will encounter..... ok maybe not 'every', but an overwhelming number of them, you will hear saying something like : you need 25x your spending, to be able to retire well. If your spending is 5000 a month, or 60K a year, boy that leads to a big number. 25x of 60K is ..... drum roll..... an Ungodly 1.5 million. If you are spending 4K a month, for 48K a year, you will need a good 1.2 million. These numbers are astronomical. To see how astronomical, lets me show you the chart.
How long will you stay trapped
If you are saving that 2K a month, and have 250K or about saved, and you stay on that saving trajectory, getting the stock markets usual 10% a year over year return, then the table looks something like the following.

As you can see, from quarter million to 1 mil+ takes you about 10 extra years.
Thats 10 years of ambition, life-force, and experiences.
Now ofcourse you did be having experiences in that time too, but there is something completely different about building your own thing. You wont be doing that. Or not doing that as your full time focus.
How does the trap work
The trap is quite appealing. It works
